🇯🇵 Japan
Founded in 1967 in Tokyo by Mitsuhiro Matsuda, the brand began as a fashion house before launching its first eyewear collection in 1989. Inspired by Gothic architecture, Victorian art and American jazz, Matsuda frames are entirely handcrafted in the renowned artisanal workshops of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, requiring up to two years and 250 steps for each individual model. Titanium and Japanese acetate are the materials of choice, worked with techniques combining over 50 years of experimentation and creative exploration. In the 1990s Matsuda became a global phenomenon with over 500 stores worldwide, a symbol of historically modern design that continues to influence contemporary eyewear.
